English Green Belts: Co-developing exploratory scenarios for contentious peri-urban landscapes

Co-developed exploratory scenarios were created for England’s Green Belt landscapes in 20 years. Three scenarios: “Intensify & Diversify”, “Build-Build-Build” and “Multifunctional” were framed on a governance-functionality axis, identifying future drivers, impacts and assumptions.

To co-develop diverging exploratory future land-use scenarios for English Green Belts and establish stakeholder perceptions of multifunctionality in the Green Belt. Specifically, the research questions are: (1) What are the current and future land-use interests, options and visions for Green Belts? (2) How are different Green Belt futures, including multifunctionality perceived by different stakeholders? And (3) How the governance of the built and natural environment would need to change to enable and achieve these different futures?
