In April 2022, a group of 17 stakeholders working with urban agriculture in Lansing, Michigan gathered for a scenario planning workshop. The workshop’s hosts, researchers based at Michigan State University, prepared a workbook to guide and structure the conversation and to communicate previous research results. Community members co-created actionable pathways toward a desirable future for urban agriculture in 20 years – i.e., 2042. The conversation produced three different scenarios that outline pathways toward a more resilient, sustainable and just urban agriculture system:
(1) Urban Farming In the 21st Century: A South Lansing Vision
(2) Shared Processing Facility
(3) Urban Gardens Are a Source of Income and Community Resilience
See our report for a detailed description of the scenarios. The report also includes the workbook, a useful tool for facilitating participatory scenario planning.
Participants and facilitators co-created diverse strategies (with short- and long-term actions) to support progress towards a shared vision.
The scenarios were made in: 2022
The scenarios look out to: 2042
