This project aimed to engage a diverse group of local stakeholders from the Monterrey Metropolitan area to co-create visions and pathways towards safe and just futures for the city. We collaboratively created a local safe and just Earth system boundaries model for the city, and then explored visions and transformation pathways to achieve a future within these locally identified boundaries.
Three distinct visions emerged, reconceptualizing the city’s relationship between nature and society, and each with unique pathway dynamics. These pathways call for cultural, economic and social paradigm shifts, underscored the fragility of transformation, trade-offs across boundaries and scales, and the need to address systemic inequalities to achieve transformative change.
Insights from the study were shared with these local stakeholders to inform decision-making. The research also contributed as a local case study of transformation pathways for the Earth Commission’s ongoing work on safe and just boundaries, offering concrete avenues for change for Monterrey while challenging the assumptions that guide global scenario-making processes.
The study catalyzed further futures-focused initiatives by workshop participants, and is being used as a local case study within Earth Commission Transformation Pathways working group
