Desirable futures for small-scale fisheries in Uruguay

This project co-created desirable and plural visions of the future for small-scale fisheries in Uruguay. Using an arts-based approach (Collaging futures) and leveraging the agency of emerging innovative initiatives, different food system actors and knowledge systems were engaged in a creative, hands-on visioning process.

The visioning process had two main goals: i) to provide a concrete output—an artistic boundary object—to serve as a compass for articulating collective actions in the present towards desirable futures; ii) to act as a key step in consolidating a transdisciplinary space to spark sustainability transformations for small-scale fisheries in Uruguay.

Envisioning desirable futures proved instrumental among a diverse group of participants. The transformative space encouraged both academic and non-academic participants to collaboratively plan actions, fostering a sense of confidence, motivation, and optimism about the future of small-scale fisheries in Uruguay. In practice, this approach empowered a transdisciplinary group to continue working together on collective actions.
