The aim of our scenario study was to diversify SSPs / exploratory scenario archetypes by introducing a systematic scenario assessment approach relating to assumptions on plausible future governance modes. The idea is that SSPs / scenario archetypes and chosen governance modes form a scenario matrix providing a logic for scenario narratives in each cell of the matrix. This approach was employed regarding reindeer herding in Finland, and led to development of 10 scenario storylines for reindeer futures. The work started with perspective paper Sarkki et al. 2023 who developed 3 scenario skeletons within Sustainability scenario archetype / SSP 1. The work was complemented in a research paper Sarkki et al. 2025, focusing to the reindeer case in more detail. Annex of that paper (Sarkki et al. 2025) includes the 10 reindeer futures storylines. Conceptually, the scenario approach to diversify SSPs was published in Sarkki et al. 2026.
