Ocean Futures
Oceans make up more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, contain 80% of its life, and produce half of its oxygen. Although it may feel far away from land, the ocean’s future is foundational for the future of everything and everyone else.
From fishing, mining, and genetic piracy to seasteading, international cooperation, and animal communication, the ocean is a stage for radical imagination and stakeholder engagement. This page collects scenarios that explore the vast space it has to offer.
This thematic page is in collaboration with the EU Horizon Europe project INSPIRI (Imaginative Narratives and Scenarios for Inspiring Restoration and Innovation for European seas and water system). INSPIRI is a collaborative mission to restore the health of the EU’s Ocean and water systems by 2030 and 2050. INSPIRI unites citizens, scientists, policy-makers and artists across four key Lighthouse Regions (Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Sea, Baltic Sea, and Danube Delta), in a transformative journey built on four core actions. First, co-creative visioning for sustainable water futures builds the foundation. Second, these visions are turned into robust scientific scenarios in alignment with key EU environmental goals. Third, INSPIRI seeks to engage decision-makers in regional Transformation Labs, which leads to fourth, inspiring citizens to make the future of water a shared and meaningful conversation.
